Record Day 2013 was supposed to be the day where all of Orange Juice’s catalog was re-issued on vinyl. Perhaps that happened, but so far I’ve only been able to track down Texas Fever which I purchased from Sweat Records in Miami, FL. (flip through my archives to see the Orange Juice picture 7” I scored in Japan).
I ordered Foxygen’s We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic directly from the label. Foxygen may wear their influences on their sleeve, but the songs are all great & they are clearly having fun. This record is already one of my favorite of 2013 & is in heavy rotation both on the turntable & in the car (as it comes with a digital download).
Truth is, I’ve never been a big fan of Pink Floyd post-Syd Barrett, but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett. Over a decade ago, I was thrilled to find this used re-issue of Relics at Green Apple Books in San Francisco.
While MBV’s Loveless isn’t the easiest record to find, I’ve been lucky enough to find it 3 times. The first one I purchased with my employee discount at The Record Garden in Eugene, OR & somehow lost it between moves, the second copy I bought from Ozone Records in Portland, OR & managed to scratch both sides pretty badly (think too many drunk people in one room) & finally this copy which I just purchased from Earwax in Brooklyn, NY.
Poet and publisher, Bruce Covey, made a limited-run broadside of a poem forthcoming in my book, Dork Swagger. The book will be published in the fall by Coconut Books. The opening line, “Hated for great qualities” happens to be a pretty great song from Blonde Redhead.
